Ten Trends For Spring 2010

Monday, January 25th, 2010

Ten Trends For Spring 2010 (Click to Polyvore for details, where to buy and pricing.)

1. Lucite: It’s not just for strippers anymore.

2.  If you’ve got the legs, shorts are the shizznit for Spring.

3. Neutrals: Nude is the new black.

4.  Loving this lingerie inspired dress from Calypso. Note: The word inspiration is key; your bra is not a shirt.

5. Bright accessories add a modern glow to warm your winter gloom!

6.  Feminine is back, complete with pretty pastels and rows of ruffles.

7. Safari styles infuse a sense of adventure, and add a rough-hewn edge that balance out girlish silhouettes.

8.  From swimsuits to sandals, patterns and prints cover everything this season.

9.  Go for sheer sheaths and translucent tees, but do yourself (and us) a favor – wear something underneath.

10. The clog sandal is so super seventies? It makes me want to throw my car keys in the bowl…

Real Life Fashion Series #003: L

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

Last time; my photography blows and I took it on a phone in my bathroom. In other news, if you can get past the ghetto set up and lack of an actual human being, I dug this out my closet last minute to wear to a work dinner for J. Is it stunning? Maybe not, but relatively chic, comfortable, appropriate for the occasion, and most importantly…free.

I’ve recently been able to drag myself from the depths of the panic that often ensues when one has to pull together an outfit for a particular event. It used to be “ShitIhavetorunoutandbuyadressrightnow,” while recently I’ve been opening my closet around 4:30 PM, only to stare blankly at its contents. (Whether this is due to the economic climate, time restrictions as a result of motherhood, or lack of truly giving a crap, I’m unsure.) This is what I came up with, and if I can do it you can too.

(Trina Turk Velvet Jacket: Nordstrom, Catherine Malandrino Silk Camisole: Loehmann’s, Amrita Singh Gold & Crystal Earrings: Loehmann’s, Cynthia Rowley Vintage Slouchy Pants: Hand me down from my mother, Linea Pelle Gold Leather Clutch: Gomatta Girls, Te Casan by Fay Baldock Silk/Satin Booties: Loehmann’s)

It’s sunny in L.A – very sunny. ALL THE TIME. Before you say ‘Oh poor baby’ in that sarcastic tone, it really does makes it quite difficult to feel cozy around the holidays. On the flip side? 9:30 AM to 2:30 PM. Hi! This would be the sum total of daylight hours in Scandinavia during the Christmas season, which thankfully marks a festive and happy reprieve from days spent living in the dark. Beginning in the first week of December, you’d be hard pressed to find a window sill that isn’t bright with advent candles or tiny stars, sparking the lead off to a celebration that lasts well into the middle of January – I’m in.

Not only am I on board? So is my new fave kid’s clothing company, Polarn O. Pyret! They’re kicking off the season with a to-die-for Holiday Collection, including cozy Snowman and Winter Wonderland body suits for baby. Their toasty Organic Cotton Pajamas, are perfect for snuggling up in candlelit rooms with cinnamon rolls and hot chocolate, enthusiastically anticipating the Scandinavian tradition of St. Lucia Day. The festivities shift into high gear on Christmas Eve, when the tree is decorated with traditional ornaments made from straw, candy and gingerbread. *Sigh* A welcome respite from LA, I can almost feel the warm fire on my cheek as I watch the snow falling outside and…*STARTLING RECORD SCRATCH*

An unfortunate side effect to long days spent celebrating? They’re freaking long, and after scarfing down baked goods and chugging chocolate – not to mention the maniacal sugar aftermath that often ensues – your kid’s clothes can look pret-ty crappy. Those Swedes think of everything, everything I tell you since their lovely Holiday tops, blouses and dresses are not only loose fitting for comfortable all day wear? You can throw them in the wash. Yep. All of ‘em. Even that gorgeous velvet party dress.

Just when you thought it couldn’t get better, it does. In addition to their gift of no dry cleaning, Polarn O.Pyret is now offering a whopping 35% off of the entire Holiday Collection, in addition to the rest of the site (excluding Classic Stripes and sale items), now through December 12th; simply enter code HOLLYPOP at checkout! They’re also launching a special St. Lucia’s Eve celebration, with their ‘12 Holly Days’ Advent Calendar, from December 12th – 24th. One window per day will be opened to reveal yet another gift – a specially selected item at 40% off! Be sure to check out polarnopyretusa.com, as well as their Facebook Fan page for details. In the meantime…? I’m moving to Sweden.

Further proof that just because you’re a mom, doesn’t mean you can’t be fashionable. (And without having to spend a lot of cash.) Exhibit #001: D. At home, on a Sunday afternoon, look cuter. (And yes my chic mommy friends, beware; this does in fact mean that you are now fodder for my website.) After telling her about seven times how much I was digging her outfit, D sweetly acquiesced and allowed me to take her photo…and grill her about her ensemble item by item (details below). Yet another opportunity to demonstrate that having kids isn’t synonymous with looking schlubby. Thanks D! xoxo

Banana Republic Heritage Ruffle-Collar Shirt $24.99, GAP Destructed Boyfriend Jeans $59.50, Bernardo ‘Dream’ Flats in ‘Pewter Glove’ $129, Coopersong ‘Hipster’ Eco-Tote in Black $55

(All other jewelry and accessories are either no longer available, or cannot be purchased online.)

It’s no secret that I have a tough time putting the brakes on purchasing little dude clothes, but if I had girls? It could be a Chapter 11 sitch, and The Trendy Tot would be zero help. This stuff is so crazy cute, that it makes me want to weep for all of its sweetness (those chubby fingers and tiny pigtails could be a contributing factor). I’m a total sucker for any handmade, quilted looking, kids stuff, reminiscent of the things my grandmother used to (and my Aunt Carol still does) seem to so effortlessly whip together.

Jen at TTT is also one smart cookie; her items are made from 100% pre-shrunk cotton, and most of them are ’season-less’ for close to year-round wear. I also love how she shows the short sleeved tops and dresses, layered over long sleeved tees. She touts her designs as “forgiving of the almighty growth spurt,” with jumpers later becoming swing tops, and peasant dresses turning into, well – you get it. Just in time for the holiday shopping kickoff, enjoy free shipping courtesy of The Trendy Tot and L.A. Stylist Mom, through Friday, November 20th; simply enter LASTYLE in the comments section of the payment process. And hey – if the Elephant Jumper is good enough for Shiloh…? That’s right.

Love ‘em or hate ‘em, sequins are the deal for Fall 2009. I happen to love them (yet oddly, have yet to make a purchase…I might want to revisit that) in all their Bianca Jagger circa ‘77, Studio 54 glory, but hey – that’s just me. Being that they are super trendy, you might not want to make a huge investment. On the flip side? I also think that they’re pretty versatile; anything that can work with jeans and black tie, is a go in my book. You in…?
