H&M 'The Garden Collection' Eyelet Tunic $14.95

I would wear this a skillion and one times this summer…as a dress…with linen pants…or jeans…as a bathing suit cover-up. You get it.

SizeWize: The Online Shopping Genius!

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

You don’t know it yet, but you worship Amanda Fries. She has single handedly made it significantly easier for you to shop online. The biggest hesitancy that many of us face when doing so is, “What freaking size am I supposed to buy?!” And let’s face it, nothing is more of a pain in the ass than the old return by snail mail; finding a box (because if you’re like me, you’ve already hastily thrown the original one away), paying for shipping, schlepping to the post office, blah, blah, blah. It’s enough to make me want to hoof it to The Grove on a Saturday, and if you live in L.A, you know that that’s about as appealing as eating light bulb. Never fear ladies because SizeWize.com is in the hizzay…WOOT WOOT!

The concept behind SizeWize is simple.  The website tells online shoppers their correct size for nearly every women’s clothing brand and retailer, from Abercrombie and Fitch to Zumiez. One of their most unique features is the ability to enter one’s clothing size in one brand, and then search for the correct size in any other brand (HI!). “If someone wears a size 6 petite pants in Ann Taylor, and they want to know what their size is in Banana Republic, now they can find out,” explains Amanda Fries, the goddess behind SizeWize. Customers can also enter their measurements to find out their correct size in almost any brand, as well.

Better still SizeWize is free! Fries goes on to say that “I created this site because so many of my friends were complaining about the exact same problem that I had. Shopping for clothes online is supposed to save you time and money, because you don’t have to spend the gas money and take the time to drive to the mall, find a parking space, and then wait in line for the waiting room, and then wait in line again to pay for your clothing. But in reality, we waste more time and money returning or exchanging items because we have to guess at what size to buy. Any woman who’s ever shopped for clothing knows that you can be a size six in one brand and a twelve in another brand!” And so, SizeWize was born. Because Fries knows that women like to shop for their children online as well, she currently has a children’s version in development. Could we love her any more…?

Aside from the fact that I kinda want to live here? The shoe selection is ridiculous (think Vivienne Westwood, Proenza Schouler, and Dries Van Noten). A must-see if you’re in NYC, but if not? Surf a little shoe porn in the meantime…

Real Life Fashion Series #003: L

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

Last time; my photography blows and I took it on a phone in my bathroom. In other news, if you can get past the ghetto set up and lack of an actual human being, I dug this out my closet last minute to wear to a work dinner for J. Is it stunning? Maybe not, but relatively chic, comfortable, appropriate for the occasion, and most importantly…free.

I’ve recently been able to drag myself from the depths of the panic that often ensues when one has to pull together an outfit for a particular event. It used to be “ShitIhavetorunoutandbuyadressrightnow,” while recently I’ve been opening my closet around 4:30 PM, only to stare blankly at its contents. (Whether this is due to the economic climate, time restrictions as a result of motherhood, or lack of truly giving a crap, I’m unsure.) This is what I came up with, and if I can do it you can too.

(Trina Turk Velvet Jacket: Nordstrom, Catherine Malandrino Silk Camisole: Loehmann’s, Amrita Singh Gold & Crystal Earrings: Loehmann’s, Cynthia Rowley Vintage Slouchy Pants: Hand me down from my mother, Linea Pelle Gold Leather Clutch: Gomatta Girls, Te Casan by Fay Baldock Silk/Satin Booties: Loehmann’s)

Ten Online Shopping Sites I Love…

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

…in no particular order:

1. Refinery 29: Touted as a “marketplace for independent fashion” it encompasses numerous stores in one site; I love Honey in the Rough and In God We Trust.

2. See Kai Run: I’ve been buying Z & R shoes here since they were babies (*sniff*). Not only are their shoes podiatrist friendly, they’re stupid cute and often on sale with great shipping deals! They also support the Soles4Souls campaign, which I dig.

3. Gomatta Girls: The Gomatta’s get all the good stuff that ‘falls off the back of the truck,’ and you don’t need an invitation. One of the smaller sample sale sites, I find them to have the deepest discounts – but not for long! Only a few items are featured each day.

4. A+R Store: In addition to their stores in Silverlake and Abbott Kinney, A+R continues to deliver “Global design. Edited.” I love most everything here, including Batacuda’s ‘Eco-Plastic Jewelry’ and Toy Me’s ‘Capsule Necklace.’ It’s also an amazing site for unique gifts.

5. Aloha Rag: I adore this site for both its diverse selection of new designers, and copious assortment of edgy veterans, including Ann Demeulemeester, Martin Margiela and Lucien Pellat-Finet. Like shooting fish in a barrel.

6. Shopstyle: An invaluable shopping resource, Shopstyle allows you to sort by type, brand, store, sale, price and even color, making that elusive item easier to find. WARNING: You’ll also find more than a few you didn’t even know you wanted.

7. Zappos: The granddaddy of online shoe shopping is not only well-stocked and comprehensive, you can now receive free shipping for life when you sign up to be a Zappos VIP! They’ve also expanded to include higher-end designers like Alexander McQueen, Sergio Rossi and DSquared2, at Zappos Couture.

8. Old Navy: Yes, really. I go to stock up on little dude staples, like solid cotton long sleeve tees and lace-less sneaks. They carry lots of things online that you won’t find in-store, and teamed up with ‘two-for’ and shipping deals, it’s a win/win!

9. Roseark: BEST. JEWELRY. EVER. The only thing better than perusing the online store is hitting the one on Crescent Heights Blvd. A must-visit if you’re in L.A. to shop.

10. Gilt Groupe: I saved this one for last, since more boxes are delivered to my home with their return address than any other. Hands down my very fave online sample sale site – easy to navigate, great designers, kid stuff, dude stuff…be sure not to miss their end of season blowouts – the discounts are insane…

Levi's 539 Organic Cotton Eco Vintage Jeans in 'Shadow' $39.99

Just a few of my faves for the dudes on your list! FYI for the seemingly randoms; the Noonon Polo is stupid soft cotton and an incredible fit. I bought one for J, I should have bought five. The jeans also have an amazing cut and wash, not to mention they’re eco, and for just forty bucks…?! I’m not a fan of ‘fashion’ sneakers (*shudder*), so keep it simple and classic with a sturdy pair of JPs. If you’re looking to splurge, do it on to-die-for cuff links he’ll adore, or a modern-classic Paul Smith wallet, because who doesn’t love Paul Smith?? (If you don’t, keep it to yourself.)

(Shout Out to the FTC: This post was not sponsored by any of the above vendors, nor did I receive a single item of swag.)

It’s sunny in L.A – very sunny. ALL THE TIME. Before you say ‘Oh poor baby’ in that sarcastic tone, it really does makes it quite difficult to feel cozy around the holidays. On the flip side? 9:30 AM to 2:30 PM. Hi! This would be the sum total of daylight hours in Scandinavia during the Christmas season, which thankfully marks a festive and happy reprieve from days spent living in the dark. Beginning in the first week of December, you’d be hard pressed to find a window sill that isn’t bright with advent candles or tiny stars, sparking the lead off to a celebration that lasts well into the middle of January – I’m in.

Not only am I on board? So is my new fave kid’s clothing company, Polarn O. Pyret! They’re kicking off the season with a to-die-for Holiday Collection, including cozy Snowman and Winter Wonderland body suits for baby. Their toasty Organic Cotton Pajamas, are perfect for snuggling up in candlelit rooms with cinnamon rolls and hot chocolate, enthusiastically anticipating the Scandinavian tradition of St. Lucia Day. The festivities shift into high gear on Christmas Eve, when the tree is decorated with traditional ornaments made from straw, candy and gingerbread. *Sigh* A welcome respite from LA, I can almost feel the warm fire on my cheek as I watch the snow falling outside and…*STARTLING RECORD SCRATCH*

An unfortunate side effect to long days spent celebrating? They’re freaking long, and after scarfing down baked goods and chugging chocolate – not to mention the maniacal sugar aftermath that often ensues – your kid’s clothes can look pret-ty crappy. Those Swedes think of everything, everything I tell you since their lovely Holiday tops, blouses and dresses are not only loose fitting for comfortable all day wear? You can throw them in the wash. Yep. All of ‘em. Even that gorgeous velvet party dress.

Just when you thought it couldn’t get better, it does. In addition to their gift of no dry cleaning, Polarn O.Pyret is now offering a whopping 35% off of the entire Holiday Collection, in addition to the rest of the site (excluding Classic Stripes and sale items), now through December 12th; simply enter code HOLLYPOP at checkout! They’re also launching a special St. Lucia’s Eve celebration, with their ‘12 Holly Days’ Advent Calendar, from December 12th – 24th. One window per day will be opened to reveal yet another gift – a specially selected item at 40% off! Be sure to check out polarnopyretusa.com, as well as their Facebook Fan page for details. In the meantime…? I’m moving to Sweden.

Bargain(s) Of The Week!

Cynthia Rowley Black Satin Shift Dress $99.99

Cynthia Rowley Black Satin Shift Dress $99.99

Nine West 'Phantom' Black Suede Bootie $69.99

Nine West 'Phantom' Black Suede Bootie $69.99

These are too good to pass up! The shift (originally marked at $275) is a gorgeous, versatile, classic that can be dressed either up or down, depending. It will save you countless times from the ‘I have a formal event WTF do I wear?’ dilemma. You will have it forever, I promise. The booties (down from $99)? Same deal versatility wise, however they probably won’t save you, and will last only several seasons in lieu of forever. That’s not really the same deal at all now that I think about it, but for seventy bucks…?
