Clothing and accessories inspired by a Disney movie? I was skeptical, even though I loved “Alice in Wonderland” as a child and love that Tim Burton made an updated movie version, because you never know what rabbit hole designers will fall into when creating pieces based on a film. But after seeing some of the Alice in Wonderland Disney Couture items at the W Hollywood hotel’s party last week, I was pleasantly surprised — impressed, even.
When I saw this statement necklace by Tom Binns, I wanted to rip it off the mannequin and wear it right then and there. Who could resist these red candy-like hearts, safety pins and crystal chains? It’s cute and edgy at the same time. I want, want, want! Too bad it costs more than $1,000…

There’s more: a broken tea cup necklace inspired by the Mad Hatter tea party and a chain-and-charm necklace featuring all kinds of images from the movie.

I also really liked the Charlotte Tarantola cardigans inspired by the film. Once again, the cute-yet-edgy look is prevalent with ruffles on the placket, a Tarantola signature. The black-and-white lace printed cardigan was my favorite.

And the pièces de résistance, the Sue Wong dresses. The Flower Wonderland-Inspired beaded gown ($588), with a tulip petal skirt, is gorgeous. And the Red Queen-Inspired dress ($388), which is really black, is very cool.

And check out the lobby of the W Hollywood. It’s very open and modern, though I question the use of British terms such as “lifts” for elevators and “WC” (i.e. “water closets”) for restrooms. I bet the hotel will change that WC to restrooms soon enough. Anyway, a walk through the hotel’s Delphine restaurant yielded a modern take on art deco decor that I liked a lot. Too bad they were full (supposedly, with reservations, despite having many empty tables) and couldn’t seat us. Maybe another time.

One of the things that has always been a huge drag about H&M, is that you can’t shop online (unless you speak German). You can however, check out their stuff, and with the addition of their Fashion Studio, you can now waste hours of your precious time mixing and matching various outfits on an underwear-clad model (think paper dolls for big girls). You can even choose a ‘head’ for your model in order to emulate ‘your’ coloring, to perhaps get a better idea of what the outfits might in fact look like on you. I’ve taken the liberty of putting together this little ensemble, which is a most reasonable two hundred bucks for everything. It’s also a good transitional outfit from winter to spring. That is all. (Price of jeans estimated at $39.95)

Inspired by Nine West’s Spring Collection, I am now obsessed with the copper. Spring Blues may the most popular upcoming trend, but wouldn’t copper make an excellent accent color? Think about this: an Alice and Wonderland dusty blue dress paired with a layered copper chain necklace; a blue denim shirt worn with giant copper earrings; or a bright turquoise romper worn with metallic copper heels. These looks could steal the show! Are you interested now?
Above are a few of my favorite copper picks for Spring 2010. I drool over this copper swimsuit by Marc Bouwer; it’s just so fashion forward and bold. Jillybean Green makes my heart beat fast. It’s like all the kid stuff I scour the web for, loaded into one happy little spot. And it’s fun to say (you know you just said it). Although in ‘the real world’ it seems a bit early to start thinking about Spring, it’s already old news in the fashion realm. Exciting news however, since it includes loads of floral prints, pale pinks, ruffles and generally all things girly (*batting eyelashes coyly*) – a timely backdrop for these delicate and sparkly Laura Gibson earrings.
Crazy, coming from an artist who began her career as a sales and marketing specialist for IBM. Luckily for us Laura did a one-eighty, and bravely decided to pursue her dream of becoming a jewelry designer – props to that Laura! She’s been featured in Harper’s Bazaar UK and InStyle Weddings amongst others, and continues to create her timeless designs from her studio in Tucson. She focuses on a number of collections including Bridal and Breast Cancer Awareness (love), in both white and yellow gold, in addition to her newest pieces in sterling silver. Laura uses what seems like a skillion different stones, too numerous to name, making her collections diverse with something for everyone. I like her stuff because it reminds me of the ‘upscale’ Anthropologie…

Last time; my photography blows and I took it on a phone in my bathroom. In other news, if you can get past the ghetto set up and lack of an actual human being, I dug this out my closet last minute to wear to a work dinner for J. Is it stunning? Maybe not, but relatively chic, comfortable, appropriate for the occasion, and most importantly…free.
I’ve recently been able to drag myself from the depths of the panic that often ensues when one has to pull together an outfit for a particular event. It used to be “ShitIhavetorunoutandbuyadressrightnow,” while recently I’ve been opening my closet around 4:30 PM, only to stare blankly at its contents. (Whether this is due to the economic climate, time restrictions as a result of motherhood, or lack of truly giving a crap, I’m unsure.) This is what I came up with, and if I can do it you can too.
