Real Life Fashion Series #002: K

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

My friends hate me, but damn if they’re not great sports! (Note: If I’m going to continue with this series, I need to either get a better camera, or a better eye – most likely the latter.) I accosted K in the schoolyard with an iPhone – hi K! – but it’s her own fault for looking stupid cute.

Before I had kids, I used to subscribe to the theory that my girlfriend Jeff taught me; “Always dress like you’re going somewhere better, later.” Although I’ve (you’ve?) recently slacked in this department, K has clearly not, even though she too shuffles two little (albeit very well dressed) dudes around to games, school and parties like the rest of us commoners. In case you don’t have a naturally taught and tanned bod from years as a gymnast or your current regime of outdoor daily tennis? That tunic dress would also be perfect over leggings. Love her.

(Blinde ‘Accidental’ Sunglasses from Loehmann’s $100-ish, H&M Black Tunic Dress $39.95, Martin+Osa Black Snake Print Shopper $49.75, Steve Madden Black Leather ‘Ballack’ Boots $169.95, Forever 21 Ring $3.80)

Ed Hardy Large 'Tanya' Satchel in Gold $139

Um, pretty sure he knocked off a Foley + Corinna Metallic City Tote and popped one of his douche-y looking tattoos on it. It’s exhausting. What the hell does ‘Love Kills Slowly’ even mean? I’m surprised he didn’t opt to use the same tattoo that’s on his back – his logoenjoy!

Real Life Fashion Series #001: D

Further proof that just because you’re a mom, doesn’t mean you can’t be fashionable. (And without having to spend a lot of cash.) Exhibit #001: D. At home, on a Sunday afternoon, look cuter. (And yes my chic mommy friends, beware; this does in fact mean that you are now fodder for my website.) After telling her about seven times how much I was digging her outfit, D sweetly acquiesced and allowed me to take her photo…and grill her about her ensemble item by item (details below). Yet another opportunity to demonstrate that having kids isn’t synonymous with looking schlubby. Thanks D! xoxo

Banana Republic Heritage Ruffle-Collar Shirt $24.99, GAP Destructed Boyfriend Jeans $59.50, Bernardo ‘Dream’ Flats in ‘Pewter Glove’ $129, Coopersong ‘Hipster’ Eco-Tote in Black $55

Giveaway: Sing an Eco-Friendly Tune With Coopersong!

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

Coopersong Mid-Hipster Bag in 'Black Eve' (14"H x 12"W) $50

Coopersong Mid-Hipster Bag in 'Black Eve' (14"H x 12"W) $50

Let’s face it; we’re living in a wasteful time. I’m not going to get preachy, but given the opportunity I’ll certainly do my part where I can, since I’m a firm believer that every little bit helps. Coopersong is no exception, with their line of bags and accessories crafted from all-natural, organic, and re-purposed materials. Founder DeAnna Cooper creatively utilizes recycled bicycle inner tubes (that once trekked miles through the Colorado mountains) as the handles on all of her bags. She also features other reclaimed items such as baseball leather, as well as buttons and buckles from the 1940’s.

I happen to love the Mid-Hipster Bag pictured, which would make the perfect ‘un-diaper’ diaper bag; better still when paired with the adorable, polka dotted, Mommy Packs, that include an insulated bottle bag and changing pad. There’s also an awesome retro-print Stroller Bag in a pattern called ‘Women,’ for those of you who prefer a true diaper bag. For kids both young and…not so young (that’s you), be sure to check out the insulated Eco Lunch Bag, that comes in your choice of what seems like a skillion different fabrics – stupid cute!

Now for the best part; if you happen to be in the Los Angeles area this coming weekend, Coopersong is having a trunk show*, with prices ranging from $3 to $90, including numerous styles and items not pictured on their website! Not only will you get the first up-close look at the Fall/Winter 2009 collection, there will be snacks, door prizes and a play area for your little ones, so you can SHOP. IN. PEACE. For those of you not in the L.A. area, L.A. Stylist Mom is giving away a $25 Coopersong gift certificate! To enter, simply visit the Coopersong website, choose your favorite item, and then leave a comment** on this post telling us what it is – that’s it! Hope to see you at the show, and if not, be sure to tell them I sent you!

*The Coopersong Trunk Show will be held on Friday, November 6th, from 1PM-7PM, and on Sunday, November 8th, from NOON-4PM. Please call 310.415.8474 for location and details.

**All comments must be received by the end of the giveaway on Wednesday November 11th, at 11:59 EST. The winner will be chosen at random, notified via e mail on Thursday November 12th, and announced on L.A. Stylist Mom Friday November 13th. Open to U.S. residents only.

Shop For The Cure With Intermix & Marilyn Minter!

Exclusive Marilyn Minter For Intermix 'Bright Pink' Tote $48

Exclusive Marilyn Minter For Intermix 'Bright Pink' Tote $48

Since October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, there are tons of amazing ‘Shop For The Cure’ items available, but this ‘Bright Pink’ tote is by far one of my faves. It was created in conjunction with contemporary artist Marilyn Minter, with a still image from her art film, Green Pink Caviar (quite compelling, if the trailer is any indicator). A percentage of the proceeds will benefit a national non-profit called Bright Pink, whose focus in to empower high-risk women between the ages of 18 and 45, in being savvy to their approach to managing their breast and ovarian health. The only thing better than a cool bag? One with a purpose.

Santos Snake Clutch in 'Hunter Green' $320

Santos Snake Clutch in 'Hunter Green' $320

Mesi Clutch in Black $170

Mesi Clutch in Black $170

Fall is in the air! Well, not here, but somehow my body is still attuned to that ‘now it’s September and school has started so bust out the cozy clothes’ schedule. Fortunately for us, so is Felix Rey. You might know F.R. from their fantastic collaboration with Target last spring (one of the best, in my opinion), but I’ve been a longtime fan of their edgy, girly, sensibility; I especially love that their stuff doesn’t look like everything else.

The Fall Collection is no exception, full of luxe ruffles and bows, and sumptuous textures like suede and snakeskin. They’ve taken their signature feminine style, and toughened it up a bit with gorgeous fall colors like ‘Asphalt’ (chocolate brown), and a deep, rich shade called ‘Hunter Green.’ Although the Suede Ruffle Tote is available in both, for those of you who prefer a bright splash of color, never fear – the stunning Santos Snake Clutch also comes in a dazzling shade called ‘Amethyst.’ (My personal fave!)

The best news? Not only will you receive 20% off at Felix Rey from now until October 7th with code FRLASM20? We’re also giving away this fabulous Mesi Clutch (pictured above) worth $170, to one lucky reader! I own one in Hot Pink ‘Ikat,’ lined in a heavy leopard print grosgrain, and I’m not sure if I’ve ever loved anything more. To enter, all you have to do is leave a comment on this post, letting me know what topics you’d like to see more of on L.A Stylist Mom. That’s it! Looking forward to hearing from you, and good luck!

*All comments must be received by the end of the giveaway, on Wednesday October 7th, at 11:59 EST. The winner will be chosen at random, notified via e mail, and announced on L.A. Stylist Mom, Friday October 9th. Open to U.S. residents only.

Emilio Pucci Turquoise 'Leite' Large Terry Cloth Beach Tote $120 (Retails for $715)

Forgive me as I am ever so slooowly re-immersing myself back into my ‘real’ life (dog puke anyone?). Have I mentioned that I’m not amazing with transition…? With kindergarten, haircuts, and uniforms on the back burner (for now), historically one of the first things I do upon retuning to my hometown, is ditch the kids, jump into the car with my mom (the best shopper on the planet for about sixty different reasons) and head to the local Loehmann’s.

The sale was on, and the discounts were gorgeously deep. I tried to focus more on my day-to-day ensembles, rather than shopping for all those amazing nights out that usually only happen in my head. I think I did okay, save for the impractical Pucci beach tote that I just couldn’t pass up ($120 down about seven times from a ludicrous $715 – WTH?!), and The Steve Madden (WTH x 2, since I usually cannot stand SM) platforms that I still think are kind of slutty. Regardless, they make my fat feet look cute as do the gladiators, so there. Oh, and the chandelier earrings! (Mine are, incidentally, all clear stones.) On second thought, not such a stellar job on the day-to-day wear. At least I managed to eek out some jeans and tees, but boy will those slutty shoes look hot in a parallel universe…

Fair Trade Artisanal Handbags From NOVICA

Friday, July 10th, 2009

Yellow 'Urban Safari' Handbag by Nanan for NOVICA $109.95

Yellow 'Urban Safari' Handbag by Nanan for NOVICA $109.95

I found this handbag in of all places, my inbox, which is flooded with PR e mails on a daily basis, most of which end up in the trash. (For the record, I wholeheartedly believe in the integrity of content, and am certainly not going to write about something based solely on the fact that there is an incentive. I write about what I like, and what I believe in, period.) In association with National Geographic (love), NOVICA specializes in free trade artisan home decor, apparel, jewelry, and handbags from around the world, including West Africa, Brazil, India, and Thailand. Their philosophy is to create a ‘bridge’ between the buyer and talented artisans to whom you would not otherwise have access, and in doing so they are changing lives.

With each product listed, NOVICA provides the name, photograph, region, background, and mission statement of the artist who created it, allowing for a more personal experience and connection with the product’s origin and designer. The artist that spoke to me in particular, is Nanan, a Javanese designer now living in Bali, and the creator of this gorgeous ‘Urban Safari’ leather handbag (which, incidentally, retails for $249.95). I love the fact that it looks so refined and modern, and at the same time rustic in it’s simplistic yet beautiful artistry. Although I’m partial to this sunny yellow, it’s also available in dark brown, ivory, and white. Nanan also has other similar styles, in addition to a wide array of totes and handbags by artists from other regions. How better to support independent designers then by picking up a one-of-a-kind handbag that everyone else on the planet doesn’t have – literally?? The whole thing just makes me happy…
